Nancy Reagan passed away today at age 94. The former First Lady of the United States, First Lady of California, and actress was in her husband's second administration when I was born.
As a little girl fascinated by politics, I often recieved books about the first ladies as gifts and reading her biography was among my favorite. I didn't understand her or her husband's politics at all, but as far as first ladies went, I thought her story of being a movie star and then involved indirectly in politics through her husband's career was pretty interesting.
Also, I was too young to remember her "Just Say No to Drugs" campaign but we studied it frequently in my public policy classes and though the effects were not entirely successful, it was memorable nonetheless.
Goodbye, Nancy. You were the first First Lady I ever knew and modernized the post for subsequent generations.
